Ally is off the other machine, but still requires an oxygen mask. The oxygen is running at a pretty high rate. She is also getting chest PT every couple of hours. She is more alert today, but she seems kind of defeated. She will sometimes respond to us, but is more interested in watching TV (something she doesn't usually do). It looks like we are going to be at the PICU for a while.

bring her a therapy dog, quick! she needs to get her mind off of herself (hard, I know) and onto something outside of her current little PICU world. they should allow one if there are any at that hospital.

I don't think they let therapy dogs into ICUs ~~ be surprised if they did. But I think you're right -- would work.

My view: she's just exhausted. And who *wouldn't* be. . . .

The doctor we had for my mother made the point that when the body is trying to heal itself (she was recovering from pneumonia), there is only so much energy available, so other systems, the unnecessary ones (like communicating with other people), tend to shut down. Keep in mind that the cognitive brain consumes a lot of energy.
