Summer tableau, life lesson.

Perched

high enough to see prey

young enough to hope mom shows up

well fed enough to be bigger than parents

leaving a hole in the stomach

from that missed meal

and waiting

But mouse beware

those hawkeyes are getting sharper

along with the talons,

only those couple of yellow down feathers

on the crown of the head

to give any hope

as you rustle at your peril.
