Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.
(Robert Frost, 1923)

Robert Frost always said it well.
John Muir also said it rather well: "I wonder if leaves feel lonely when they see their neighbors falling."
Somehow fall touches the very soul of the human spirit. That may be why it's my favorite season.
And why you are the gentle man of my heart. . . .
