LOOTING versus SCAVENGING

[x007.jpg]
picture added April 5, 2008 almost a year after jc's death. . . .

The pictures of the people involved in the hurricane are so touching, and my soft heart has been aching a lot, but I can't seem to stop looking.

I've found one where a person's only shoes were two pieces of cardboard held on by three rubber bands each. Another where an older woman's hands are totally waterlogged. Many of people whose clothes are soaked through, and others who are neck deep in water.

I remember someone complaining when the looting involved shoes and clothes, but after seeing some of the shoes people are wearing in the pictures, and knowing that most people's shoes were completely soaked, I'm adding shoes to the list of things that I don't consider "looting." After seeing a woman carrying a completely naked baby down the street, I think clothes can become just as important to survival as food and water.

The picture is here (until I learn how to post them myself).
